My CrossFit Beginnings

My older brother was doing CrossFit around 2016/2017 and I had just stopped dance training full time. He mentioned that I would enjoy it and so with a bit of persuasion, within 6 months I started CrossFit and never looked back! A few months later I visited Mvmt Hub and started training with the coaches, immediately loving the community from the start. Since then, I’ve been coaching here for almost 6 years and throughout that time it still holds true that we have an amazing bunch of humble and hardworking individuals that make it easy to get out of bed in the morning!

Coaching Style, Highlights and Staying ahead of the Game

Describe your Coaching Style
My coaching style is a mixture of having fun and making people feel comfortable in a gym environment, but also keeping everyone to a high standard of movement quality. I want people to move really well and safe for longevity.

Favourite Part About Coaching
There is nothing better than when I see people get those light bulb moments for the first time. Whether it be understanding movements or performing a new skill, it never gets old!

How do you balance your personal life and coaching life?
I guess like any job, staying organised and keeping some sort of structure and routine helps me a lot with balancing my social and personal life!

How do you stay fresh/relevant as a coach?
I always want to keep learning and up skilling myself, so I’m always keeping up my professional development!

Handling Set Backs

What are your thoughts on injuries and set backs in training?
I’ve had some decent injuries over the past few years - namely a broken foot, myocarditis and right now in the midst of a 5-month long knee injury. Each time I’ve had a big injury I do build more resilience and know that there is always opportunity in adversity. Right now, I’m using this time to work hard on some strength deficits to get me back stronger than ever!

Community and Culture

What do you think creates such a good community at the Hub?
There is no room for ego at hub. The range of people, abilities and ages we have and the support each and every member gets is second to none.

How do you feel you contribute to the community and culture?
Part of our mission is to make sure every single person feels supported in their own goals and that they are part of a supportive and uplifting community, regardless of where the person is in their own fitness journey. Making sure everyone in class knows each other to help build community and a positive vibe when class starts is vital.

I also love a ‘question of the day’ as it gets people chatting, which is always a great way to start off the class!

Advice to Members

Top Tips for Someone Starting Their CrossFit Journey
Don’t rush the process. If you are planning on keeping a long term, sustainable fitness routine then trust in your coaches, and oh please, please prioritise movement quality, as this will be important for the rest of your life.
In regard to nutrition, I myself am very balanced and relaxed with nutrition. I’ll make sure I’m getting all the ‘necessary stuff’ but also will eat ‘soul foods’ regularly. I don’t believe in an all or nothing approach, it is all about finding out what works for you.
Oh, and be in an environment that you enjoy!

What do you believe people should search for in a CrossFit coach? *Take note aspiring coaches
Find a Coach who is always learning, evolving and keeping up with what works for the individual. You can never know enough in this industry!
From a personality standpoint I believe coaches should be personable, confident, empathetic and passionate.

What does life outside the gym look like and what does the future hold?

Lots of rehab and training! If all goes well with the rebuild from my current knee injury, I have hopes of requalifying for the Australian Weightlifting Nationals and competing again at the end of the year.

Otherwise I love the beach, food and coffee, spending time with my partner and our almost 2-year-old American bully named Billie. Billie’s my baby girl and requires a lot of time outside of coaching and training!
Oh and I hope to do a lot more travelling
